The most common type of fog in Vermont is mountain fog, a type of radiation fog. Cold dense air comes down mountains at night. On the valley floor it collects and forms as fog. It forms after a hot day and a cold night. When the ground is still warm, but the air is cold. Water vapor rises and night air traps it, creating fog.
